Understand the Basics

Information has value and can be exploited. Protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data (known as the "CIA triad") is the main priority. Good strategy involves deploying "layered security," which simply means implementing important technical, physical, and administrative safeguards.

The goal of data security is to prevent unauthorized access to information and IT assets. Important information that should be protected includes:

  • Personal information, i.e. name, address, DOB, SSN, driver's license number, etc.

  • Financial information, i.e. credit and debit card numbers, financial account numbers, PIN codes, etc.

  • Health information, i.e. protected health information, health records, employee health plans, etc.

Hackers are one of many threats to data security and not all hackers are equal. Some hackers are looking for a quick buck through identity theft or financial crimes. Others want sensitive business information, like trade secrets. Others are motivated by political agendas or have malicious objectives.
